Our Leadership
Joseph Walters, President
Joe Walters, the principal behind Mutual Development Company and J. Walters Construction Co., has a wealth of experience in the construction industry that spans several decades and multiple states. His journey began in 1974 at Phillips Construction in Overland Park, Kansas.
A Foundation of Service
After serving as an air traffic controller in the United States Marines, Joe returned to Phillips Construction in 1981. He quickly moved into development and project management roles, working in Phoenix, Arizona, from 1982 onward.
- Diverse Expertise: Joe’s extensive background covers a wide range of construction sectors, including retail, office, medical, industrial, and multi-family projects.
Founding J. Walters Construction
In 1987, Joe established J. Walters Construction. Under his leadership, the company has successfully completed projects for a long list of nationally recognized clients, including:
- Retail & Food Service: Walmart, Aldi, Kohl's, Kmart, Walgreens, Burger King, and Raising Cane's.
- Industrial & Automotive: Anheuser Busch, Americraft Carton, Firestone Tire Co., and Kragen Automotive.
- Home & Specialty: Ethan Allen, Best Buy, and Hobby Lobby.
Expanding Horizons
In 1989, Joe formed Mutual Development Company LLC to build projects for his own account. In total, J. Walters Construction has completed projects in 21 different states, from Kansas City all the way to California.
Life Outside of Work
When he's not on a job site, Joe loves to travel and spend time with his family. His hobbies include sailing and scuba diving. He also frequently visits his hometown of Kansas City.
Michael Clark, Vice President
Since joining Mutual Development in April 2016, Michael Clark has been pivotal to the company's expansion, focusing on single- and multi-tenant development across California and the Southwest. His main responsibilities include site identification and entitlements.
A Background in Brokerage and Finance
Michael has a deep and extensive background, having worked for over 18 years in industrial and retail brokerage before coming to Mutual Development.
- Retail Tenant Representation: From 2002, he was with Velocity Retail Group in Phoenix, specializing in representing a variety of retail tenants.
- Financial Expertise: Michael also collaborated with Accelerated Development Services, where he applied his finance skills to underwriting and pro forma analysis.
Representing Top-Tier Clients
With his long career in brokerage, Michael has represented a diverse list of both landlords and tenants.
- Landlords: His clients have included major firms like Prologis, Duke Realty, and Sears Holdings Company, among many others.
- Tenants: He has worked with well-known brands across the West and Southwest, such as CVS/pharmacy, Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen, Mattress Firm, and Carl’s Jr.
Personal Life
Michael is a graduate of The Ohio State University with a degree in real estate and urban analysis. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, he now lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, with his young daughter, Reese.
